Sun Prairie Police Department Media Release - Where and What to Do When School Buses Display Flashing Red Lights
The Sun Prairie Police Department would like to remind motorists that state law and local ordinance requires school buses, when parked on the roadway in the City of Sun Prairie, to activate the equipped flashing red warning lights when loading or unloading pupils or other authorized passengers. This also includes if the school buses are parked in front of a school in a designated school loading zone but still on the roadway. Only in those situations where the school bus is completely off the roadway, for example a parking lot, are school buses exempt from activating their flashing red warning lights when loading or unloading passengers.
When a school bus does activate the flashing red warning lights, motorists who approach the front or rear of that bus are required to stop their vehicle not less than 20 feet from the bus and shall remain stopped until the bus operator extinguishes the flashing red warning lights. Those motorists who violate that requirement will be reported to the police department by the bus company for further action.
Over the course of the next two weeks, and as part of the police department’s continuous traffic education safety program, the police department will be proactively monitoring school areas for any violations in the interest of ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our students in the community.
