At 5:35 am this morning, a resident of Harper Woods returned to his home on Van Antwerp Street across from Poupard Elementary School and was confronted by an intruder in his basement. The homeowner fired a handgun at the suspect who fled the residence. The homeowner contacted the Harper Woods Police Department who immediately responded and began searching for the suspect. Harper Woods officers and our canine unit are on scene and have set up a perimeter to secure the area and are continuing to search for a black male wearing a green hoodie.
We are in contact with officials from the Grosse Pointe School System and at this time school will open as scheduled. Harper Woods officers will maintain a heavy presence in the area to ensure the safety of students, parents and staff as they arrive for school. It is unknown at this time if the suspect was shot by the homeowner. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Harper Woods Police Department at 313.343.2530.
