Traffic and Parking Enforcement For Public Safety - Rye Canyon Loop, #LASD Santa Clarita

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Deputies Request Persons Visiting Collision Site Obey All Laws

The investigation of the traffic collision wherein two people lost their lives on Saturday, November 30, 2013, in the city of Santa Clarita is continuing. A more specific description of the location where the collision occurred is Hercules St. at Kelly Johnson Pkwy, which is very near the business park at the 28300 block of Rye Canyon Loop, Valencia.  The Office of the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner will determine the identities and the cause of death of the victims. Their investigation is continuing.

As the investigation continues into this tragic incident, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Deputies ask that all persons wishing to visit the site of the tragedy follow all local and state laws, including traffic laws and posted no parking signs.  Many people have come to the site, including news media, throughout the day and night since the collision occurred.

Many drivers are choosing to park in an unsafe manner along the curb on a street that is a curve.  This poses serious safety concerns as approaching motorists often cannot see that cars or people are there.  Most of the area has “No Parking” signs and other traffic signs to help prevent collisions. Since Saturday, many people have been ignoring these signs and warnings and are endangering themselves and passing drivers. The posted speed limit in the area of the collision is 45 MPH.

Deputies ask that people wishing to visit the area park legally and safely in appropriate and legal public parking areas.  Also, follow all pedestrian traffic laws when walking to the site.

Importantly, many area businesses have private parking lots, with posted signs, and people who park in those parking lots are subject to having their vehicles towed as dictated by law, which include the rights of the nearby property owners.

This is a tragic incident.  Sheriff’s deputies understand many people are choosing to visit the site to assist in the grieving process.  Yet it is important to take legal safety measures to help avoid injury to people in the area.  Deputies have issued many warnings but some members of the visiting public have continued to endanger themselves and others.

Deputies are conducting frequent patrols of the area and all laws are being enforced by issuing citations. This includes enforcement of posted “no parking” signs.

Deputies appreciate the cooperation of the public so that we can avoid issuing citations, and most importantly, so that no one visiting the area is injured.
