Increase in residential burglaries in the Township of North Brunswick

Increase in residential burglaries in the township:

Over the last several weeks, the North Brunswick Police Department has seen an increase in the number of residential burglaries occurring in the township. This trend is not exclusive to our township. Surrounding municipalities are reporting similar activity in their jurisdictions. In our incidents some residents have seen unusual activity but were reluctant to report it, dismissing it as probably nothing. We encourage you to report all unusual or suspicious activity by calling 911 for emergencies or 732-545-3200 for non- emergent activities such as those that happened in the past. We have deployed covert and overt cameras to the areas affected. We have also increased patrols and are utilizing un-marked units with detectives to try and catch the suspects. Often suspects see the police activity and wait until they leave the area to complete the crime. That’s why we need your help. If you see something, say something! Talk with your neighbors who may not be signed up for Nixle Alerts. Encourage them to do so at Nixle.com.

Information we have gathered so far on incidents and suspects includes the following;

Most incidents are occurring in the area off Rt. 130 in the Hoover Drive section but some have occurred further south near Victory Place. Residents in other areas should be alert as we have seen sporadic incidents in other areas as well including Suwanee Drive, North Mohawk, Marc Drive, and Weber Road. Most incidents are occurring on Monday’s. The common method of entry is looking for open entry points or easy access and then prying a door or window. Most incidents are occurring during the daytime or early evening hours when people are at work. Often the suspects will knock on the door first to see if anyone is home. If confronted they will claim to be from a repair or utility company, looking for a friend or saw an ad for an item being sold. Approved township solicitors undergo a background check and carry photo identification badges. Residents should not confront the suspects but try to obtain any descriptive characteristics, vehicle information, license plate numbers, etc. Most of these crimes are non-violent meaning the suspects do not want to confront residents while they are home. They are looking for an opportunity to enter your home quickly with no confrontation and get as many easy access, high value items as possible, i.e. jewelry, electronics. Person of interest is a spanish male, driving a light colored silver or grey mini-van. This is not confirmed as the suspect or suspect vehicle so residents should report any suspicious activity.

We are working diligently to stop these burglaries. If you have any concerns or details to report please contact Captain Roger Reinson at 732-247-0922 x-338.
