Message regarding planned demonstrations
As noted by many, the deputy involved shooting last week was a tragedy on many levels, and one that has affected our entire community. The investigations into the event are ongoing, but we want to speak about the upcoming demonstrations.
The demonstration last Friday was mostly peaceful, but there were incidents that created risk and were harmful. Some demonstrators brought replica weapons to the march, and at least one person displayed a very realistic looking replica handgun to passing citizens in a threatening manner. That incident created unnecessary risks for all involved and forced Santa Rosa Police Officers to respond.
The Santa Rosa Police Department respects and supports the right of the people to assemble peacefully and engage in free speech activities. We encourage all who choose to demonstrate to continue expressing their grief in a peaceful way. While law enforcement and the community at large support those activities, our community will not tolerate violence or other violations of the law during demonstrations.
Let’s work together to prevent further violence.
