Citywide Emergency Exercise Happening Tomorrow

If an earthquake or another disaster were to happen right now, are you ready? Is your family ready? Is your neighborhood ready? If you want to find ways to get ready, we encourage you to get involved in the City Emergency Exercise coming up October 26th, 2013 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. During the drill tomorrow, OES will be using Nixle to send out three preparedness messages.

Communications is a key component of disaster response. In order to continue to sharpen our skills as well as introduce the community to this type of training, the Sunnyvale Neighbors Actively Prepared (SNAP) program is sponsoring a City Emergency Exercise that will focus on public emergency communications. The exercise will cover receiving official alert notifications, communicating within your neighborhood, and communicating with city officials using ham radio operators. All individuals, businesses and neighborhood groups are encouraged to participate.

OES is also taking the opportunity to encourage residents and city staff to sign up for Nixle. Since you are already signed up, please encourage friends and family to sign up so they can also receive official messages, advisories and alerts. This system is not meant to replace the Emergency Notification System or Alert SCC; it is meant to enhance the communication ability and options the department has. In case of an emergency or a disaster, OES would be sending information and direction through various communication platforms, including Nixle.

In addition, the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety has been increasing its presence in social media – follow us on Twitter @SunnyvaleDPS for updates of the exercise throughout the day.

We are asking individuals or groups interested in the exercise to do the following:
1- Sign up for the exercise at OES.inSunnyvale.com
2- Sign up with Nixle – (But you already have - thank you!)
3- Review the Basic Participant Handbook to get an idea as to how else you will get involved located at OES.inSunnyvale.com
