National Prescription Drug Take-Back Campaign
October 26, 2013
10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
at Washington Police Station
On Saturday, October 26th, the Town of Washington will be participating in the National Prescription Drug Take-Back campaign, the Drug Enforcement Administration’s nationwide effort to take back prescription drugs. The Take-Back campaign began last summer and thousands of sites nationwide have joined the effort that provides a safe way for people to dispose of their unwanted prescription drugs.
Many people are not aware that medicines that are no longer needed but remain in home cabinets are highly susceptible to misuse and abuse, including theft. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are increasing at alarming rates, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, many people do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away – both potential safety and health hazards.
On Saturday, October 26th, all Washington residents are encouraged to participate in the National Prescription Drug Take-Back campaign. If you are unable to make the Saturday drop off contact the Police Department on Friday to make arrangements for an early drop off.
Come in, drop off your meds, visit with Ofc. Moser and bring him a Scooby-snack. at the Police Station from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to collect your potentially dangerous, expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs for destruction. This service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
