Lomita Station Open House Recap (photos posted to Facebook)

On Saturday, October 5, 2013, Lomita Sheriff Station welcomed members of the community to an Open House. This event gave the public a "behind the scenes" view of station areas that the general public usually does not see.

The rear parking lot of the station housed several interactive displays:

LASD's Transportation Services Unit showcased a bus that is used for the daily transportation of inmates from each custody facility to courthouses throughout the county. The bus is typically operated by two deputies and has two sections of benches similar to the bench seats found on a commuter bus, but separated by secured gates.

The Mounted Posse introduced their horses and posed for photos. The Mounted Posse is a group of volunteers and reserve deputies trained in mounted operations for patrolling rugged terrain as well as trained in search and rescue, using horses in places inaccessible by vehicles.

An armory table offered guests free gun locks and a view of weaponry available to department personnel. Deputies interacted with community members about a range of weapon-related topics, including firearm safety and general scenarios wherein less than lethal weapons would be deployed.

The newly acquired Lomita Station Mobile Command Post was open for display. Attendees were invited to walk through while being informed of usefulness of the trailer at situations such as natural disasters, crime scenes, and in support of local ceremonial and community outreach events.

Los Angeles County Fire Station 6 displayed their ever-popular fire truck, to the delight of many families who used the vehicle as a back drop for photos.

Crowd favorite Deputy McGruff, the crime fighting dog, stopped by to greet community members and pose for many pictures.

The Lomita Station Explorer Post and Disaster Communications volunteers gave informational presentations of the respective services, of which there are many, that each provides to our communities.

The men and women of Lomita Station want to thank the community for their support of our Open House and we look forward to celebrating the station's 40th anniversary in 2015!
