10-12-2013, Press Release: Aggravated Assault

On October 12, 2013 at about 1:40 A.M., officers on foot patrol of the downtown area were alerted to a report of two men fighting on Main St. Officers responded at which time one of the subjects fled from the scene. Officers chased the subject and caught up with him following a brief foot chase. The subject initially resisted arrested, but was taken into custody without incident. The subject was later identified as Christopher Mesick (age 31) of Jeffersonville, VT. Mesick was found to be in possession of a loaded handgun, which was not used during the incident.

Officers determined that Mesick had stabbed the subject that he was fighting with in the abdomen. The male subject that had been stabbed was later identified as Shea Black (age 29) and he was transported to Fletcher Allen Health Care where he underwent surgery and was admitted to the hospital. The knife used during the incident was subsequently recovered by officers.

Investigation revealed that Shea and Mesick didn’t know each other and that Black acted as the aggressor and started the fight with Mesick. Both men had been consuming alcohol downtown.

Mesick was subsequently arrested for Aggravated Assault and Resisting Arrest and lodged at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Center for lack of $25,000 bail. Shea was also charged with Aggravated Assault and his bail was set at $5,000.

Anybody with information about the incident is asked to contact Det. Jeffrey Beerworth at 802-540-2280.
