Compton Structure Fire on Bullis Rd, Sat,1:39am. 3 Occupants and #LASD Deputy Injured

At 1:39am on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, Compton Sheriff's Station deputies responded to the 600 block South Bullis Road, Compton, regarding a structure fire call.

Upon the deputies arrival, they saw a Hispanic man attempting to use a shovel to break through an exterior wooden slat wall of a garage that was engulfed in flames. They quickly learned the man was attempting to rescue an African-American woman who was trapped inside the burning garage.

Deputy Fernandez took the shovel from the man and pried loose some of the garage’s exterior horizontal wooden slat sidings. Meanwhile, Deputy Flores used his hands to remove the now loosened wooden slat sidings, to create a hole large enough for the female victim to escape/be rescued through.

Once the hole was large enough, Deputy Juarez reached in through the hole and pulled the incapacitated and badly burned woman to safety. The woman suffered burns over the majority of her body. Two additional burn victims were discovered (male Hispanics) that were inside the garage, but were able to exit prior to the exit being completely blocked by flames. Deputy Flores received minor burns to his right hand.

The victims were described as: a46-year Black woman, and two Hispanic men aged 55 and 68 years.

City of Compton Fire Department firefighters battled the blaze and brought it under control. The origin of the fire is under investigation.
