October is Crime Prevention Month
In recognition of National Crime Prevention Month, the Ontario Police Department reminds everyone that safe neighborhoods start with community involvement. Beginning in 1984, October has been designated by the National Crime Prevention Council as a month to emphasize education and awareness of crime prevention issues and to promote community engagement through volunteerism and participation in the National Neighborhood Watch Program
Throughout October the Ontario Police Department Crime Prevention Unit will be holding Neighborhood Watch meetings to inform residents of ways to empower themselves through education and to explore new partnerships that build stronger, crime resistant communities.
The Ontario Police Department also recognizes the many individuals who have taken personal responsibility for their neighborhoods as well as community organizations that work for the common good. According to Ontario Chief of Police Eric Hopley, “Crime Prevention Month reflects the fact that collaborative prevention efforts yield tremendous benefits in reducing crime and making communities stronger and safer.”
Neighborhood Watch Block Captains are encouraged to host a Neighborhood Watch meeting during the month of October. For additional information on forming a Neighborhood Watch group, please contact the Ontario Police Department’s Crime Prevention Unit at 909-395-2939 or [email protected].
