Be aware of fraud scams over the phone preying on Medicare recipients
Recently an elderly Dexter Township resident received a call from an unknown male, described as having an Indian accent. The male identified himself as being with Medicare and needed to verify some information. The victim refused to provide the information, at which time the male stated that he had the resident’s personal information and just needed the resident to confirm it. The male attempted to retrieve banking information from the resident by providing three bank account numbers and having the resident confirm which account was theirs. When the resident refused to confirm the bank account and provide a bank routing number the male stated that all Medicare benefits would be terminated first thing in the morning, at which time the resident disconnected the call.
As a reminder never provide personal information including address, date of birth, social security number, or banking information over the phone.
