Burglary suspect falls from bushes at feet of deputies. Two Rancho Palos Verdes Arrests

On Tuesday, October 1, 2013 around 6 a.m., Lomita Sheriff's Station responded to Toprail Lane in Rancho Palos Verdes regarding the report of a suspicious male sleeping in a black Honda Civic. The Civic was quickly determined to have been stolen from the city of Costa Mesa. As the reporting party was speaking with Lomita Station, a dark colored vehicle pulled alongside the Civic. A male exited that vehicle and the two males briefly spoke and then began transferring property from one car to the other. The property turned out to be stolen items taken from a residence on Toprail Lane.

Deputies from Lomita Station quickly arrived and attempted to detain the two males. The male from the Civic complied with deputies' orders, however, the other individual fled into Colt Canyon.

Deputies quickly contained the area of Colt Canyon, sealing off all likely avenues of escape. With assistance from an LAPD helicopter, along with deputies strategically positioned at intervals throughout the canyon, the suspect was cornered.

After several minutes of flailing, falling, and stumbling through thick brush and cacti in his futile attempt to escape, the suspect fell out from bushes at the feet of deputies that had been waiting at the bottom of the canyon for him.

Deputies later learned that the suspects drove to the area in the stolen Civic, committed two residential burglaries, and stole another car in the process. All stolen property has been returned to its rightful owners.

Andrew Gatling from Newport Beach and Roy Ortega from Westminster were arrested and booked at Lomita Sheriff's Station for several felonies, including burglary, possession of stolen property, possession of heroin, methamphetamine and cocaine.

They are both to be arraigned in Torrance Court on October 3, 2013.
