On September 13, 2013 the suspect fraudulently leased welding equipment valued at over $15,000 from the victim business. The suspect had somehow obtained information from an existing open business account with victim business and used it to lease the welding equipment. It was later learned that the suspect had listed a piece of the welding equipment for sale on Craig's list. Detectives were able to track the suspect in this case to a residence in Upland California.
On 09-26-13, Carson Detectives traveled to Upland, where they served a search warrant on the suspect's residence. Detectives found and seized evidence related to the theft of the welding equipment in addition to a stash of narcotics. Detectives also arrested the suspect and booked him at Carson Station. Detectives then tracked down several stolen items to a pawn shop nearby where they were recovered and returned to the victim business.
This is another reminder that members of the public should use caution when buying items listed on the internet. Unsuspecting buyers may be purchasing stolen merchandise and may become victims themselves in the buying process.
