SUMMARY:

The Redwood City Police Department and Redwood City Police Activities League will formally recognize local residents who have done exceptional work in assisting law enforcement officials in significant cases over the last year. A career legacy award will be presented to San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe for his outstanding job performance and exceptional service to the local community. We will also present awards to Redwood City police officers and firefighters whose actions have gone above and beyond the call of duty. The awards will be presented at the first annual Redwood City Police Department Awards Gala, to be held at the Hotel Sofitel, 223 Twin Dolphin Dr., on Thursday, October 24th, at 6:00pm. This exciting gala event will be open to the public and features a sit-down dinner with a full program of awards and community acknowledgments.

The Redwood City Police Department and the Police Activities League (PAL) would like to personally invite you to this event which will benefit the Police Activities League. The Police Activities League is celebrating its 18th year of “Building the Bond between Cops and Kids” in 2013. PAL offers athletics, educational programs, civic, and cultural activities as viable alternatives to street activities. This year there are more than 3,500 girls and boys participating in programs at the PAL Community Center and on sports fields and school gyms throughout the community. To continue our efforts and successes, we count on help from supporters like you.

The following awards will be presented:

Distinguished Citizen Award:

The Distinguished Citizen Award is presented annually to a member of the community who distinguishes himself or herself by assisting the Redwood City Police Department in protecting and serving the citizens of Redwood City. This award acknowledges exemplary work by the citizen in the pursuit of justice by providing assistance to members of the Redwood City Police Department or for outstanding community service to the citizens of Redwood City.

Stephen Wagstaffe Prosecutor of the Year Award:

The Stephen Wagstaffe Prosecutor of the Year Award is presented annually to a prosecutor who has performed his or her duties with outstanding job performance, enthusiasm, teamwork and integrity. Additionally, this award acknowledges exemplary work by the nominee in the pursuit of justice and promoting and maintaining a positive working relationship with members of the Redwood City Police Department.

Medal of Valor:

The Medal of Valor is awarded to an officer who performed an act of true valor or heroism beyond the call of duty and the officer used sound judgment in accordance with the high standards of the Redwood City Police Department.

Life Saving Medal:

The Life Saving Medal is awarded to an officer who performed an exemplary act under emergency conditions wherein a service is rendered that resulted directly in sustaining a human life.

Police Officer of the Year:

The Police Officer of the Year Award is presented annually to an officer who embodies a high moral character and demonstrates exemplary performance in all areas of police work and strives to help the community. The award will be given to an officer for performing meritorious police work for a specific event or day-to-day excellence.

Professional of the Year:

The Professional of the Year Award is presented annually to an employee who embodies a high moral character and demonstrates exemplary performance in all areas of their work, and strives to help the community. The award will be given to an employee for performing meritorious work for a specific event or day-to-day excellence in support of the Department.

Outstanding Police Duty Award:

The Outstanding Police Duty Award will be presented to members of the Department for outstanding police service accomplishments in the following categories:

Any officer for an outstanding arrest on or off duty.

Any Department member for an outstanding arrest or solution of crime through follow-up investigation.

Outstanding Community Service.
