*Update* Deputy Involved Hit Shooting-East Los Angeles Sheriff's Station #LASD E. 3rd St & S. Humphryes Av

** Update **

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide detectives are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding a deputy-involved (hit) shooting that occurred Tuesday, September 17, 2013, at approximately 4:29 PM, in the intersection of East 3rd Street and South Humphreys Avenue, East Los Angeles.

Detectives have learned that the deputies assigned to the East Los Angeles Operation Safe Street (O.S.S.) gang unit responded to an Assault With a Deadly Weapon call for service in the 4200 block of Michigan Avenue, East Los Angeles. When deputies arrived, they discovered that victims had been shot at by a suspect that fled the area in a white colored 2013 Mercedes Benz. No one had been struck by gunfire from this incident.

While the O.S.S. deputies searched the area for the suspects, they saw a white colored 2013 Mercedes with a passenger that matched the description of the suspect that fired upon the victims on the 4200 block of Michigan Avenue. The deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle however the vehicle failed to yield and a pursuit ensued.

The two suspects entered the southbound 710 freeway at 3rd Street, East Los Angeles, with the deputies following, they immediately exited the 3rd Street off ramp. When the suspect’s exited the freeway, their vehicle collided into a stop sign. The passenger of the vehicle then fired rounds from within the vehicle at the deputies, resulting in the deputies returning fire. This was the first exchange of gunfire during this incident. It is believed the suspect was not struck at this time.

The suspects’ then drove northbound Humphreys Avenue where their vehicle collided into MTA rail tracks (no MTA train was involved in the collision). As the vehicle became disabled due to the collision, the passenger exited from the vehicle with a handgun at which time the second deputy-involved shooting occurred. The suspect was struck by gunfire in the upper torso.

The wounded suspect was transported to a local hospital where his condition was listed as stable. The driver was taken into custody.

A weapon was recovered at the scene.

No deputy personnel were reported as injured.

There is no additional information at this time.
