Suspect Arrested After Hillside Fire in San Anselmo

On September 12, 2013 at 4:11 p.m., the Central Marin Police Authority received multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting a fire in three eucalyptus trees near the apartment building at 101 Sunnyhills Drive in San Anselmo. The fire was located on the hillside between Memorial Park, 1 Veterans Place, and the apartment building.
Firefighters from Ross Valley, Marin County, Kentfield and Larkspur Fire Departments responded to the scene to fight the fire. Two Cal Fire planes responded and dropped fire retardant over the area to help extinguish the fire which covered approximately 1 acre.
Law enforcement from the Marin County Sheriff’s Office, Fairfax Police Department, and Ross Police Department responded to assist with evacuations, traffic, and crowd control.
A witness contacted an officer at the scene and relayed that a male subject they thought was responsible for the fire was at the Redhill Shopping Center. A criminal investigation was conducted and Douglas Hall Shumate, was taken into custody. He was transported to Marin General Hospital where he was treated for a minor burn to his face. Shumate was later booked at Marin County Jail for 452(C) PC- Reckless Starting of Fire on Public Lands and 1203.2 PC- Violation of Probation.
