Hesperia Police Department - Driver arrested for vehicular manslaughter following a fatal traffic collision at bear Valley and Third Ave

DATE/TIME: SEPTEMBER 9, 2013 / 1841 HOURS
INCIDENT: FATAL TRAFFIC COLLISION
LOCATION: BEAR VALLEY ROAD AND THIRD AVE, HESPERIA

INVOLVED PARTIES:
SUSPECT: ASHLEY ROSE, WFA, 23 YEARS OLD, APPLE VALLEY
VICTIM: TRACY PEINE, WMA, 25 YEARS OLD, HESPERIA

SUMMARY:

On September 9, 2013 at about 6:41 p.m., Deputies from the Hesperia Station and rescue personnel from the San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to a two vehicle traffic collision in the intersection of Bear Valley Road and Third Avenue in Hesperia. Responding deputies arrived and found a 1998 Ford Taurus driven by suspect Ashley Rose and a 1997 Ford Ranger pickup that were both heavily damaged and located on the south curb line of Bear Valley. The Taurus was resting partially on top of the Ranger truck and a male passenger, later identified as Tracy Peine was trapped inside the Taurus. Rescue personnel arrived on scene and pronounced Peine deceased from major injuries he sustained in the impact of the collision. Rose received minor injuries during the collision and she was transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center. The adult male driver of the Ranger truck was not injured and he was released at the scene.

The Hesperia Station Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) responded to conduct the investigation. It was determined that the driver of the Ford Taurus (Rose) was traveling west on Bear Valley and attempting to make a left turn onto Third Ave. Rose was in the center turn lane behind other vehicles when for unknown reasons she exited the turn lane into the east bound lanes of traffic and began to make her turn. The east bound driver of the Ranger who was in the number 2 lane could not avoid the collision and struck the Taurus on the passenger side, killing Rose’s passenger (Peine). The collision forced both vehicles off the roadway to the curb line of Bear Valley. Investigators believe Rose was under the influence of alcohol and she was taken into custody at ARMC after being treated and released for her minor injuries. Rose was later booked at West Valley Detention Center for PC 191.5 (Vehicular Manslaughter).

Bear Valley was closed in both directions for about 5 hours while investigators processed the scene for evidence. The collision is still under investigation by the Hesperia Station Traffic Division MAIT Investigators. Anyone who was in the area and witnessed the collision is asked to contact Deputy Simon Demuri at the Hesperia Station at (760) 947-1500
