Truck/Train Crash in Montgomery County
Montgomery County-Today at approximately 8:07 a.m. on County Road (CR) 200 east north of CR 150 south (this is just south and east of Crawfordsville) in Montgomery County, a train struck a dump truck crossing the tracks.
Preliminary investigation by Trooper Matthew Voorhees of the Indiana State Police at Lafayette has revealed that a green 2006 International 760 dump truck owned by Ratcliff Homes Incorporated out of Crawfordsville and driven by Jacob L. Davis, 24 years old from Crawfordsville was on CR 200 east. Davis was traveling northbound north of CR 150 south and started to cross the railroad crossing which is marked by a stop sign and rural RR crossing signs. The train which is operated by CSX Railway Services was eastbound approaching the crossing with horn blowing. The engineer of the train, Myles J. Slayton from Indianapolis, advised he saw the truck enter the crossing and applied the brakes but to no avail. Davis said he looked to the east but the sun was glaring in his eyes and did not see the train approaching. The train struck the dump truck on the passenger side just behind the cab. The truck was pushed about 15 yards before rolling over into the ditch on the passenger side.
Davis was not injured in the crash and was wearing his seatbelt. No one on the freight train was injured. The train consisted of 28 cars and two CW40-8 engines. The train was running between 30 and 35 miles an hour at the time of the crash. The train had left Avon, IN this morning and it was heading to Chicago. The investigation is continuing.
Assisting at the scene were Indiana State Police Commercial Motor Vehicle Sergeant Rich Kelly, Montgomery County Police Department, Crawfordsville Police Department, Crawfordsville Fire Department, CSX Personnel and Wilson’s Towing.
