Coffee With a Cop at Supermoms in Ceres

Ceres, CA – On Wednesday, September 11th, Supermoms Frozen Yogurt & More will be hosting our second “Coffee with a Cop” event. Officers from the Ceres Police Department and community members will come together in an informal, neutral space to discuss community issues, build relationships, and drink coffee.

All community members are invited to attend. This event will take place from 8-10 AM on Wednesday, September 11th, at Supermoms Frozen Yogurt & More, located at 2531 E. Whitmore Avenue, #R in Ceres. Please contact Lieutenant Brent Smith with questions: (209) 538-5721 or Brent.smith@ci.ceres.ca.us.

Coffee with a Cop provides a unique opportunity for community members to ask questions, share concerns, learn more about Ceres Police Department’s work in our neighborhoods, and get to know our police officers. These interactions are the foundation of community partnerships.

The majority of contacts law enforcement has with the public occur during emergencies or other emotional situations. Those situations are not always the most effective times for relationship-building with the community they serve and some may feel that officers on the street are unapproachable. Coffee with a Cop breaks down barriers and allows for a relaxed, one-on-one interaction.

“We look forward to these visits and the opportunity to reestablish connections with the people of Ceres. Our overriding goal is to make up for the fact that it can be difficult to connect with officers in a more social context when they are often in vehicles running from call to call to call in the performance of their regular duties. We hope to take the mystique out of who and what kinds of people police officers are and I believe you will find that they are humans just like everybody else, who care deeply about the community they serve,” said Ceres Police Chief Art de Werk.

Coffee with a Cop is a national initiative supported by the United States Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. Similar events are being held across the country, as local police departments strive to make lasting connections with the communities they serve.

The program aims to advance the practice of community policing through improving relationships between police officers and community members one cup of coffee at a time. The Ceres Police Department plans to have more Coffee with a Cop events and Ceres businesses interested in hosting future events are encouraged to contact Lieutenant Smith to coordinate.
