While many are aware that the latest Amber Alert concluded with the safe recovery of the child and the arrest of the mother, the Indiana State Police has continued to receive a number of inquiries about the Amber Alert process.

The child must be under 18 years of age.
2. The child must be believed to be abducted, and in danger of serious bodily harm or death.
3. There must be enough descriptive information to believe the broadcast will help.
4. Request must be recommended by the law enforcement agency of jurisdiction.
The first point is self explanatory. The second point often takes hours or days of investigative work by the police agency that is investigating the case, because no two cases are ever alike. The third point refers to descriptive information about possible suspects and suspect vehicle descriptions and possible license plate numbers. The fourth point, like the first, is self explanatory.
The primary role of the Indiana State Police is to ensure the four criteria mentioned above are met before an Amber Alert is approved for broadcast. The Indiana State Police shares the public’s concern that Amber Alerts are issued prudently, but always with the most concern for the well being of the abducted child.
This was the first Amber Alert request received by the Indiana State Police in 2013, as compared to 2012 when there were 10 requests made that resulted in one authorized Amber Alert activation and the successful recovery of the one missing child.
The Indiana State Police will continue to work with all police agencies that request an Amber Alert to ensure the circumstances warrant the issuance of the alert.
