Officer Involved in August 24, 2013 Shooting Identified

Ceres, CA - On August 24, 2013 at 1929 hours, Ceres Police began to receive calls of gunshots being fired at the 2500 block of Third Street. It was reported that a male was firing a handgun into the air in front of a residence. Officer Joseph Wren arrived on scene within two minutes, where he confronted three subjects in front of the residence. The officer ordered to them to the ground, but 34 year old Robert Anthony de Los Rios from Modesto did not comply and chose to move quickly to the front door of the residence.

Officer Wren began to chase Robert Anthony de Los Rios and caught him at the doorway. Robert Anthony de Los Rios reached into his waistband and pulled a handgun out, turning towards Officer Wren. The officer saw the handgun, drew his service side arm, and fired at least one round at the subject as he retreated to find cover and request additional assistance. Residents in the area called Ceres Police Dispatch, reporting the officer had been shot.

Individuals inside the residence were ordered out to the front yard. Once the scene was secured, a .40 caliber handgun was located inside the living room area inside the front door of the residence. Four subjects were detained and later released. No one was injured during the incident.

Officer Wren, a 17 year veteran police officer who has been with the Ceres Police Department for the last seven years, was placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard practice for officer-involved shootings.

Robert Anthony de Los Rios was charged with attempted murder, being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm, and unlawful discharge of a firearm.

This investigation is still ongoing and no further details will be released.
