Los Angeles County Sheriff's Parks Bureau Mounted Enforcement Detail Deputies Teach Youth Activities League Kids Horse Safety

On August 21st, 2013, The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Parks Bureau Mounted Enforcement Deputies, including Parks Bureau Unit Commander Captain Stephen M. Smith and Mona Park Youth Activities League (YAL) Coordinator Deputy Karen Velasquez, took twelve kids from the Mona Park YAL out to Industry Hills Expo Center 16200 Temple Avenue City of Industry for a Horse Safety course.

This program was started in 2007 to help children experience and have positive interactions with deputies and learn about horses. The kids go through training with the professional Mounted Enforcement Deputies from Parks Bureau who teach them how to feed, brush, lead, saddle, and ride a horse in an all-day class.

Captain Smith who is the commander of Parks Bureau said, “This is a great program that provides kids an opportunity to learn about horses and ride a horse”.

The Parks Bureau Mounted Enforcement Detail (M.E.D.) is made up of sworn personnel who are assigned to conduct law enforcement duties from the back of their equine partners. The mission of the Mounted Enforcement Detail is to provide the Department with a well-trained equestrian unit, capable of being utilized in a variety of situations.

The Sheriff’s Youth Activities League is a safe haven for youths. There are 17 of them throughout Los Angeles County and each location represents a safe haven.

For some kids, the local Youth Activities League is a place to get some much-needed help with homework. For others, it’s a place to shoot some hoops or learn a new sport without fear of physical violence or becoming tangled up in many of the other negative distractions the streets have to offer. For others, it’s literally a place to call home.
