Update: Deputy Involved Shooting, 1 Suspect Deceased, 1 Deputy Injured, 1300 Blk Long Beach Bl, Compton, Wed, July 24. ‪#‎LASD‬

At approximately 11:40 PM, Wednesday, July 24, 2013, Compton Sheriff's Station received a call reporting a drunk driver in a white, older model Toyota Tercel driving southbound on North Long Beach Boulevard from East Rosecrans Avenue, Compton.

A short time later a deputy saw the described vehicle and made a traffic stop in the 1300 block of South Long Beach Boulevard, Compton.

Sometime during the traffic stop the suspect became uncooperative and combative, and a struggle ensued. During the struggle the suspect attempted to take the deputy's gun from his holster and bit the deputy on the left arm. At that time, a deputy-involved shooting occurred.

The suspect was hit in the upper torso and was pronounced dead at the scene. The deputy was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for his injury and released.

The suspect was the only occupant in the vehicle.

Whenever a Deputy-Involved Shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies, and it results in a fatality, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene. These include separate investigations by the Offices of the L.A. Co. District Attorney and the L.A. Co. Coroner's Office, in addition to Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau. Attorneys with the Los Angeles Office of Independent Review also respond to the scene, and have full access to the facts known to the Sheriff's Department throughout every phase of these thorough investigations. Once concluded, every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.
