SMPD Arrests Suspect in Vicious Hate-Crime Attack

In the early morning hours of July 20th, SMPD Officers encountered a 55 year old male victim suffering from some serious injuries to his head and face related to an assault that had occurred while the victim was walking from the area of 3rd and Eldorado Street to the 700 block of Santa Inez Avenue. The victim indicated that he may have been targeted due to his sexual orientation. The victim was transported to the nearest trauma center, where he was treated for his extensive injuries. He is expected to survive.

SMPD Detectives worked relentlessly over the following days to reconstruct the events leading up to the attack, and identified 36 year-old San Mateo resident Santos Manuel Marquez as the attacker. At about 5pm on July 24th, SMPD Detectives attempted to contact Marquez at a residence in the 300 block of North Humboldt Street. Marquez attempted to flee through a window, and after a short chase and search, he was located and arrested without further incident. The weapon Marquez used to perpetrate the vicious attack, a large bicycle "U-Lock," was also recovered and seized.

Marquez was booked into San Mateo County Jail for attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated mayhem, and perpetration of a hate crime.
