The Oakland Police Department has recently seen an increase in purse snatches in OPD’s Area 3 (Central Oakland). Reports received describe assailants grabbing purses and the victims resisting them. Not only is this dangerous, but we are seeing an increase in injuries.
As a reminder, personal is safety is always a priority. Property can be replaced.
This information is provided in an attempt to bring awareness and education so we all can be safe. Please see the safety tips listed below.
SAFETY TIPS
Always be aware of your surroundings. Don’t be distracted by cell phones and electronic devices.
Stay in well lit, populated areas.
Stay alert and keep your shopping bags nearby – don’t leave bags unattended.
Do not leave packages, shopping bags or other items of value visible in your vehicle.
Avoid showing large amounts of cash when making purchases.
Be especially alert when entering and exiting your vehicle.
Remember to lock your car door after entering your vehicle.
Let people know when you intend to arrive at your destination, so they can keep an eye out for you.
Be alert to your surroundings, and visually mindful of suspect description, clothing, vehicles, and anything else that can help police.
