One Arrested in Adult Neglect Case

Fowler-On December 23, 2012 at approximately 4:25 p.m, the Indiana State Police at Lafayette received a call from IU Arnett Hospital in Lafayette, IN reference a neglect of an adult.

Indiana State Police Criminal Investigations Division Sergeant Bryan Harper initiated an investigation into the neglect of an adult female who was cared for by Cheryl Brown, age 54 and her husband Gerald Brown, age 60 years old from Fowler, IN. The incident alleges that the adult female had been tied to the bed to keep her from getting up and moving around. This was done to allegedly keep her from falling down and hurting herself. The victim also appeared to be malnourished and had a large bed sore on her backside.

After a thorough investigation, the information was relayed to the Benton County Prosecutor’s Office for review. A grand jury was summoned on May 29, 2013 and formal charges of Criminal Confinement with Injuries a Class C Felony, Neglect of an Adult a Class D Felony and False Informing a Class A Misdemeanor were lodged against Cheryl Brown. Cheryl turned herself in on June 6, 2013 to the Benton County Jail and was released on a $2,100.00 bond. Gerald Brown was charged with False Informing a Class A Misdemeanor and was summoned into to court on a later date.

The victim has since been moved to an adult care facility. The case is ongoing.
