Survival tips from the Belmont, Foster City and San Mateo Fire Departments.
Summertime brings an increased risk of fire due to multiple conditions like heat, dryness, activities like camping and barbecuing, and fireworks. A recent fire in Redwood City displaced many people and tragically resulted in the loss of a life. This type of emergency can happen anywhere. The San Mateo, Foster City, and Belmont Fire Departments are offering a few tips that may help you to survive a similar event, and help preserve public safety in your community:
• Smoke alarms should be installed in every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area.
• If you rent and do not have working smoke alarms, contact your landlord or property manager immediately about having alarms installed.
• Test smoke alarms at least once a month using the test button.
• Make a home escape plan. Discuss the plan with everyone in your household, including visitors.
• When the smoke alarm sounds, get out fast. You may have only seconds to escape safely.
• Get out and stay out. Never go back inside for people, pets, or things.
• After you have practiced your home fire escape drill, evaluate it and discuss what worked and what needs to be improved. Improve it and practice again.
• Other fire safety tips can be found on the San Mateo Fire Department’s website: http://www.cityofsanmateo.org/index.aspx?NID=111
