Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Honored By Local Leaders for Her Work and Dedication to the Children at Mona Park in Compton

On June 29th, 2013 Park’s Bureau Deputy Karen Velasquez was commended for her work and dedication to the youth at Mona Park. She received certificates and awards of appreciation from, United States House of Representatives, Congresswoman Linda T. Sanchez, United States House of Representatives, Congresswoman Janice Hahn, California’s 35th State Senate District, Senator Roderick D. Wright, Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, Supervisor Mark Ridley Thomas, and Concerned Citizens of Willowbrook, Pastor Deloris Glass.
Deputy Velasquez is the Youth Activities League Deputy at Mona Park. Her presence at the park has resulted in families feeling safer to go to the park. She also provides programs to about 30 youths every week helping them to choose positive paths for their lives.
The Sheriff’s Youth Activities League is a safe haven for youths. There are 17 of them throughout Los Angeles County and each location represents a safe haven.
For some kids, the local Youth Activities League is a place to get some much-needed help with homework. For others, it’s a place to shoot some hoops or learn a new sport without fear of physical violence or becoming tangled up in many of the other negative distractions the streets have to offer. For others, it’s literally a place to call home.
