“Hot Truck” Located in Tippecanoe County

Tippecanoe County-Yesterday, evening at approximately 6:30 P.M., Trooper Ashley Kelly of the Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division was called by the Tippecanoe Sheriff Department about a traffic stop they had made on a white 1988 International straight truck.

The Sheriff’s Department related that they had stopped the truck for making an illegal U-turn on State Road 38 just east of I-65 when they found that the truck was hauling seafood and the refrigeration unit was not working.

The truck was escorted to the Lafayette Post where Trooper Kelly inspected the truck and the driver, William S. Sligh, 66 of Hixson, Tennessee. He is also the owner of the truck. Trooper Kelly found that the internal temperature was in the mid 50’s when the allowable temperature is 41 degrees.

Sligh was hauling 2.000 pounds of whole fish. The Tippecanoe County Board of Health arrived and the entire load was dumped into dumpsters from Republic Services out of Lafayette.

Sligh was cited for false registration, insurance violation and illegal U-turn by the Tippecanoe County Sheriff Department; Trooper Kelly cited and put the driver and truck out of service for nineteen motor carrier violations including Indiana Food Law and log book violations. The truck was impounded and towed to Jim’s Garage.

The Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division strives to keep commercial vehicles to follow safety and stricter health guidelines to insure the food consumed is fresh and free of contaminates. Troopers work diligently to insure the products we consume are of the utmost quality.

All criminal defendants are to be presumed innocent until, and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
