Novato Police Department K-9 Program Receives $15,000 for Emergency Medical Care
Novato Police Department’s three canines are regularly put in hazardous enforcement and training situations. From entering buildings with broken glass, searching vehicles with unknown hazards such as needles, to high risk searches with dangerous terrain, Novato’s canines have a potential for injury on the job.
Community donations through the Pennies for Police Dogs Program has raised over $17,000 so far and provided the canine program with additional funds that have been used to not only purchase a third canine, but to also provide advanced training such as narcotics detection. The Peter E. Haas Jr. Family Fund recently awarded the Novato Police Department canine program a donation of $15,000 to be used as an emergency fund for canine medical care.
“We are thankful to receive such a generous donation. These funds are a health insurance policy for our canines and hope we won’t have to use it for emergency canine care,” said Chief of Police Jim Berg.
Novato PD is proud to have a very highly trained canine team that gets utilized throughout the County. Chief Jim Berg said, “This program would not be as successful if it wasn’t for our partners throughout the community and the ongoing donations the police department receives for the canine program.”
