On Monday June 10th, 2013, Deputy Gazeley was working patrol in the city of Lomita. He was monitoring traffic on 240th street when a white Volkswagen passed his patrol car at a high rate of speed. As Deputy Gazeley attempted to catch up to the speeding car, he saw the vehicle fail to stop at two stop signs and make two sudden turns. Deputy Gazeley turned the corner at Walnut Street and 242nd Street, and saw the vehicle coming to a stop. As he drove up behind the vehicle, he saw the driver, who he knew to be a local gang member, get out of the vehicle holding a pistol grip shotgun. Deputy Gazeley requested assistance from other deputies in the area as the suspect ran away and into the backyard of a nearby house. During Deputy Gazeley’s radio request, the suspect heard his name being mentioned and heard the sirens of several patrol cars approaching. He climbed back over the wall, this time without the gun, and said “You got me.”
After taking the suspect into custody, deputies searched the area and found a loaded shotgun matching the description of the gun Deputy Gazeley had seen. Jewelry was also recovered.
A 37 year old male suspect was arrested and booked at Lomita Station for assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, ex-felon in possession of a firearm, possession of stolen property, and driving on a suspended license.
