(Update) LASD Deputy Involved Shooting (Thursday), N. Bradfield Av & E. Palmer St., Compton

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide detectives are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deputy-involved hit shooting that occurred in the 1600 block of Palmer Street, Compton on Thursday, May 23, 2013, at approximately 7:24 P.M.

Homicide detectives have learned that deputies from the Compton Sheriff's Station (http://www.Compton.lasd.org) responded to the intersection of Bradfield Avenue and San Luis Street, Compton, regarding a "Shots Fired" call for service.

While responding to the location, a two-deputy patrol vehicle noticed a black colored 2000 Pontiac vehicle speeding away from the area where the possible "gun fire" call for service indicated. Believing that the speeding vehicle could possibly be related to their call for service, they followed the vehicle. The suspect vehicle drove North on Bradfield Avenue, then swiftly turned Westbound on Palmer Street; into a dead-end.

The suspect exited the vehicle in front of a residence and with a handgun in hand, ran down a driveway. The deputies gave chase, yelling commands to the suspect to stop and lay down his weapon.

The suspect then turned toward the deputies and pointed the handgun at the deputies. Fearing for their lives, deputies fired at the suspect, shooting him numerous times.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The suspect is described as a male Black adult.

One deputy sustained a non-life threatening laceration to his hand during the incident. No deputies were struck by gunfire.

A handgun, belonging to the suspect, was recovered from the scene.

Whenever a Deputy-Involved Shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies and it results in the death of a suspect, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene. These include separate investigations by the Office of the Los Angeles County District Attorney and Los Angeles County Coroner, in addition to investigations by Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau. Attorneys with the Los Angeles Office of Independent Review also respond to the scene and have full access to the facts know to the Sheriff's Department throughout every phase of these thorough investigations. Once concluded, every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.
