High School Student Dies in Montgomery County Crash

Montgomery County – This morning, at approximately 8:30 a.m., officers from the Indiana State Police and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department responded to a single vehicle crash on Old State Road 55 south of County Road 500 West, in which a teenager died.

The preliminary crash investigation by Trooper Ryan Royer revealed that Mitchell McCord, 18, Wingate, IN, was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck southbound on Old State Road 55 south of County Road 500 West. Mitchell McCord failed to negotiate a curve and traveled off the west side of Old State Road 55. He allegedly over corrected, traveled across the northbound lane of Old State Road 55, and off the east side of the road. The pickup truck then rolled at least twice before coming to rest. Michael McCord, 18, Wingate, IN, a passenger in the truck, was ejected from the vehicle.

Michael McCord died from massive internal injuries while en route to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, in Crawfordville. Mitchell McCord was transported by ambulance to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital with a shoulder contusion. Neither teen was wearing a seat belt.

This is an ongoing investigation, but at this time neither the use of alcohol nor narcotics is suspected as having contributed to this crash. When the investigation is complete all information will be forwarded to the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office. This is standard procedure for fatal crashes.

Michael and Mitchell McCord are brothers. They were allegedly en route to Crawfordsville High School, where they are students.

Trooper Royer was assisted at the crash scene by ISP Sergeant Jim Cody, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputy Richard Todd, the Waynetown Fire Department, and Star Ambulance Service.
