Parks Bureau deputies utilize advanced technology to apprehend thieves and recover stolen vehicles in Los Angeles County Parks

In the past week, deputies from Parks Bureau have arrested two different suspects operating and in possession of stolen vehicles. The apprehension of the theft suspects and recovery of the victims’ stolen cars is a product of Parks Bureau utilization of ALPR vehicles.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department enjoys a tradition of leadership and excellence in law enforcement tactics, training, and technology. Consistent with that reputation, the Department’s Parks Bureau deputies utilize the Advanced Surveillance and Protection (ASAP) plan to assist with their gang and crime fighting efforts. ASAP features a variety of technologies such as the automatic license plate recognition (ALPR) patrol vehicles. The ALPR is a computer-based system that utilizes special cameras attached to patrol vehicles to capture the license plate information of passing vehicles which identifies vehicles that have been stolen or used in serious crimes. The ALPR helps the deputies continually monitor their surrounding environment in a safer and more efficient manner. The information captured is then sent to the deputies inside the vehicle who will personally validate the information prior to taking any enforcement action. The information received is specifically for detecting stolen vehicles and vehicles used in serious crimes.

Parks Bureau deputies utilize four of these vehicles which have been deployed throughout Los Angeles County Parks for the past year.

The Parks Bureau of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department polices 177 county parks, golf courses and special event venues throughout Los Angeles County.
