Monon-Yesterday at approximately 5:51 p. m, the Indiana State Police at Lafayette were advised of a two vehicle crash on US 421 north of the intersection with State Road 16 in Monon, IN sending one by helicopter to the hospital.
Preliminary investigation by Trooper Weslee Ennis of the Indiana State Police has revealed that a green 1992 Ford Explorer driven by Michael McKinney, 37 years old from Fowler, IN was south bound on US 421. Carlos Calderon, 40 years old from Chicago, IL was driving a white 2006 Peterbuilt semi owned by Kaplan Trucking out of Cleveland, OH was north bound on US 421 when the Ford Explorer, for an unknown reason, crossed the centerline and struck the trailer being pulled by the Freightliner. McKinney had to be extricated from the vehicle and flown by IU’s Med-Flight helicopter to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis in critical condition. Calderon was not injured.
US 421 was closed for cleanup, removal of the injured and re-construction of the crash for approximately three hours. Assisting at the scene was the Monon Police Department, White County Sheriff’s Department, Monon Fire Department, Monticello Fire Department and the Monticello Police Department. The investigation is continuing.
