The Sun Prairie Police Department has completed a fact review of this incident. Police personnel have confirmed that the incident is not criminal in nature and no further investigative efforts are required.
The child has been released from the hospital and is now under family care and is “recovering well”. Family members appreciate the overall interest in the child's wellbeing throughout this process.
Original Release:
On March 20, 2013 at 8:56 A.M., the Sun Prairie Police Department, Madison Emergency Medical Services, and Sun Prairie Fire Department were dispatched to 888 Grove Street (Sun Prairie High School) for an unresponsive thirteen year old male child.
The child is a 7th grade student at Patrick Marsh Middle School in Sun Prairie and was attending a swimming session for a school physical education program. During pool activities, the child was observed under the water without movement. School staff entered the pool and removed the child from the water. The child was breathing but was not responsive. Emergency services were contacted and school staff continued to monitor the situation.
The child was transported to St. Mary’s Sun Prairie Emergency Department by ambulance. The child was treated locally and transported by ambulance to the University of Wisconsin Hospital. The child has been admitted to the UW Pediatric Intensive Care Unit for further treatment and is currently in critical but stable condition.
The police department is currently working to develop the facts of the situation. There are no indications that this incident is criminal in nature.
