Suspect Arrested in Library Break.

The Newton Police Department is reporting that at approximately 1:45 a.m. on Wednesday March 27, 2013, Newton Police responded to the Newton Free Library on Homer Street for an alarm. Upon arrival, officers located a smashed window on the southern side of the building.

Officers then secured the perimeter and made entrance into the building to check for suspect(s). Officer Valente and K9 Dakota assisted with checking and securing the building.

While checking the building, officers observed two cash registers opened with the contents removed. Officer Valente and Dakota found a bathroom with a locked door. K9 Dakota then gave indications of human odor inside that locked bathroom.

Officers were then able to gain entry after having met resistance from within. Found inside and taken into custody was 23-year-old, Pedro Lopez (Homeless). Upon searching the suspect, officers found a large amount of cash, loose change, tools, flashlight, and other various items.

LOPEZ is charged with Breaking and Entering in the Nighttime for a Felony, Larceny from a Building and 2 counts of Breaking and Entering into a Depository.

Lopez also had two outstanding warrants, out of Waltham District Court for Various M/V Violations and for 2 counts of Breaking into a Depository.
