Burglary Arrest

Dario Louis Pini, age 63, a well-known Santa Barbara landlord, was arrested for burglary.

On March 17, 2013 at 4:25 p.m., Santa Barbara Police Department Officers Mike Little and Bruno Peterson responded to a call of a burglary investigation at a construction site at 316 W. Carrillo Street.  Upon arrival they contacted the victim who is the owner of the house there.

Their investigation revealed the following.  On March 14, 2013 renovation work began at the victim’s house which was surrounded by temporary chain-link fencing.  On March 17, 2013 the victim was contacted by several residents of the neighboring apartment building at 318 W. Carrillo Street informing him that Dario Pini had twice been seen on his property.  One of the witnesses confronted Pini as he was walking off of the property with items taken from the residence.  Pini declared to the witness that he had permission to be there, but dropped the items as he left the scene when the witness threatened to call the police.  Among the items that Pini had taken from the residence under construction were copper tubing, water heater pipe fittings, and coaxial cable.  The investigation further established that Pini did not have permission to be on the property where the incident took place.  Although witnesses claimed to know Pini by sight, his identity as the suspect was confirmed with a photo line-up.

On March 19, 2013 the case was assigned to SBPD Property Crimes Detective John Ingram for follow-up investigation.  On March 21, 2013 Detective Ingram obtained a warrant for Pini’s arrest for the crime of burglary, a felony.

On March 22, 2013 at 3:10 a.m., SBPD Sergeant Dan McGrew and Officers Scott Klacking and James Lombardo were on an unrelated disturbance call on 00 W. Cabrillo Boulevard when Sergeant McGrew saw Pini standing on the sidewalk on 00 Chapala Street.  The officers contacted Pini and arrested him.  Pini declined to make a statement about the incident.  He was transported to Santa Barbara County Jail where he was booked on the burglary warrant with a bail amount of $20,000.00.
