March is Tsunami Preparedness Month
Did You Know?
- Tsunamis can be generated by both distant and local seismic events.
- If you are at or near the beach and you feel a strong earthquake that makes it difficult to stand for at least 40-50 seconds, move immediately away from the water and seek high ground.
- Tsunamis typically generate multiple surges or waves separated by an hour or more, with the second or subsequent surges being more powerful than the first.
- Officials will keep the public informed of both potential tsunami threats, but when it is safe to return to a tsunami inundation hazard zone after a tsunami has occurred.
