Local Explorer given Boy Scouts - Learning for Life, Explorer Leadership Award

On February 22, 2013, Steven Cronkhite was awarded an “Explorer Leadership Award” from the Learning for Life section of the Boy Scouts of America.

Steven Cronkhite graduated from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Departments Explorer Academy in January of 2007. He joined the Crescenta Valley Explorer Post 514 upon his graduation and has become an integral part of the post. Steven was promoted to sergeant in early 2008, and promoted to the rank of lieutenant in late 2008. Steven helped increase the size of the post from 4 explorers to 12 in under a year’s time. He has also taken the training of the newer explorers to heart and has worked with them in groups, and individually, to prepare them for radio code tests, physical fitness trainings, and hands on training (pull over and approach, searching, handcuffing and radio demeanor). Steven has been a part of every event we have had at the station (open house, Fiesta Days Run and Parade, Run for the Hungry, food and toy drive, etc).

In 2008, Steven assisted with the “Tip-a-Cop” at a local restaurant that benefits the Special Olympics. This event broke all the previous year’s totals bringing in just under $5000. Without his assistance that total would have been far less.

In 2009, Steven was nominated and awarded the “County of Los Angeles 2009 Youth Volunteer of the Year” award. Steven was in competition with dozens of other youth volunteers throughout Los Angeles County for this award, and due to his volunteer dedication, he won.

In 2010, while on a ride a long, he assisted a parent in the middle of Ralph’s grocery store while the parent’s child was having seizures. He comforted the teen, made sure he did not hurt himself, and addressed all the questions and concerns the parent had. For this, he was awarded the “Field Operations Region 1” service pin which is awarded to deputies for going above and beyond the call of duty for assisting the citizens of Los Angeles County.

In 2010, Steven was promoted to Captain. He still continues to train the explorers in all aspects of tactics, officer safety, and the law. He has also completed Criminal Justice classes at Pasadena City College. He passes on what he has been taught and learned to the other explorers so they can move on with their training towards a possible career in law enforcement.

Steven wanted to do more for his community and the station. In 2011, he joined our Civilian Volunteers as a “Volunteer on Patrol”. He does volunteer patrol in the Crescenta Valley Station area where he looks for illegally parked cars, vacation checks for local residents, and being an extra set of eyes for illegal activity.

He has attended eighteen competitions in six years. The post has placed first and second in numerous scenarios due to Steven's training and leadership.

He has completed more than 150 ride alongs, and has donated over four thousand hours to the department and the residents of Los Angeles County. Steven aged out of the Explorer Program this year and has become an Advisor with the Post. He continues to train and educate the other Explorers as he has done for over 6 years.

Steven has always wanted to be a Deputy Sheriff since he was five years old. All of his training, explorer experiences, and ride alongs, have prepared him to reach his lifelong goal of becoming a Deputy Sheriff.
