Local Trooper reaches Career Milestone

Versailles: This morning a local trooper was recognized for 25 years of service with the Indiana State Police. Sergeant Mark Helms began his career with the Indiana State Police as a member of the 45th Indiana State Police Recruit Academy graduating in December, 1987. After graduation he was assigned to the Seymour District where he was assigned to Bartholomew County. He worked the road as a trooper from his appointment date until July of 1995 when he was promoted to sergeant and has served in that capacity as a squad leader since. During his career Sgt. Helms has served as a member of the Tactical Intervention Platoon, a Field Training Officer, Field Training Officer Coordinator, Emergency Vehicle Operations Instructor, Speed Timing Device Instructor, and holds numerous other instructor certifications. He is also a crash reconstructionist.

Sgt. Helms is a native of Franklin County and a 1979 graduate of Brookville High School. He attended the University of Evansville graduating in 1983 with a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice. Prior to becoming a trooper he served as a police officer with the Columbus Police Department from 1984 to 1987. Sergeant Helms still resides in Columbus and has two grown daughters.
