Escapee Rearrested; Three Friends Facing Charges

Interim Columbia Police Chief Ruben Santiago announces the arrests of several people in connection with a suspect’s escape earlier this month.

Michael Juan Carrell (DOB: 7/8/1992) has been arrested for the second time.

He is now charged with Escape. He also faces charges for Resisting Arrest, Providing False Information to Police, Possession of Alcohol by Person under the Age of 21, Drunkenness, Malicious Injury to Property, and Petit Larceny.

The following people face charges in connection with the investigation:

Amber Dean (DOB: 10/2/1985), Keith Allen Hood (DOB: 3/8/1985)
and Melissa Rose Dean (DOB: 11/8/1992) are charged with Accessory After the Fact.

An officer placed handcuffs on Carrell and took him into custody shortly after 2:00 a.m on January 1, 2013 at the 700 block of Harden Street.

Carrell is accused of breaking a back window of the patrol car and escaping.

Before the escape, the original arresting officer attempted to render assistance to a fellow officer who was trying to break up a physical altercation across the street.

A Crimestoppers tip received this week aided CPD in the investigation.

As a result, Carrell was rearrested on January 8, 2013.

Yesterday, charges were filed against, Amber Dean, and Keith and Melissa Hood for their alleged roles in aiding Carrell.

The investigation revealed that Dean and the Hoods use a grinder tool to cut the chain off of the police handcuffs.

The suspects also allegedly used an old handcuff key to completely remove the police handcuffs from Carrell’s wrists.

Interim Police Chief Santiago says, “Mr. Carrell is now facing a felony charge instead of misdemeanor offenses. Escaping from police custody is a serious crime that shouldn’t be taken lightly. And now, his friends are charged in the case.”

All suspects were transported to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

All persons charged/arrested are presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
