Tragic School Shooting in Connecticut

As horribly tragic as the school shooting is that occurred today in Connecticut, I wanted to assure you of our policy regarding a report of any similar situation in Grosse Pointe Woods. As you know we have a Special Response Team composed of officers from the Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods. Annually, each department participates in school lockdown procedure training and training for what is termed as an “active shooter” situation.

In the event a report of a shooting in a school was reported, responding officers would enter as a team and search for and engage the suspect. We would not wait for the Special Response Team to be called and respond. All of our schools have security procedures in place.

Today, I have advised our School Liaison Officer to contact both public and private schools to ensure compliance with lockdown procedures and building security measures. In addition, due to the recent tragedies involving active shooters across the Country, we are expediting our annual training for our officers in the active shooter program.
