Crash With Under Age Driver
Sends Two to Hospital
Columbus – This morning shortly before 6:30 a.m. a car crashed after a trooper attempted to stop it for erratic driving. Indianapolis Trooper John Meyers was in route to training in southern Indiana when he drove up on a south bound car on I-65 around the 66 mile marker that was speeding up and slowing down and swerving onto the emergency strip. When he turned on his lights to stop the car it took off at a high rate of speed.
The car exited I-65 at the 64 mile marker, and attempted to turn right, or west onto SR 58.The car was unable to make the turn due to excessive speed and it slid across SR 58 rolling down an embankment onto its top. The driver, a 13 year old female reported as a runaway from Indianapolis, was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital with what is believed to be non- life threatening injuries.
The passenger, a 17 year old male also reported as a runaway from Indianapolis, was flown by medical helicopter to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. The extent of his injuries was unknown.
While the investigation is ongoing, it is believed the car the two were in, a 1998 Honda Accord, was also stolen from the Indianapolis area earlier this morning. Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Columbus City Police, Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department and EMS/Rescue.
