Subject Looses Life on Interstate
Merrillville-Today at approximately 5:57 p.m. Central Standard Time the Indiana State Police Lowell responded to a semi/pedestrian crash on I-65 northbound near the 253.8 mile marker.
Preliminary investigation by Trooper Khari Walton has revealed that a 2006 black International semi driven by Osmam Bangura, 37 years old from Miami, Fl. Was northbound in the center lane of I-65. Witnesses stated the Zuhair M. Elturk, 33 years old from Chicago was standing in the center lane when three other vehicles swerved and missed Elturk in the roadway. When they attempted to help Elturk, he ran out into the center lane again and was struck by Bangura’s semi, where he succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the semi was not injured. Family members have been notified. The investigation is continuing.
Assisting at the scene were troopers from the Lowell Post, Indiana State Police Commercial Motor Vehicle Division, Hobart Police Department, Merrillville Police and Fire Departments and the Lake County Coroner.
