Chief Responds to Notification Issue

It has become clear that there are numerous citizens of Saratoga Springs that feel the police department failed them by not immediately making a public notification of a reported rape that occurred on September 1, 2012. As Chief of Police, I am ultimately responsible for information made public concerning reported crimes and other department activities. In that regard, I take full responsibility for the decision not to immediately notify the public in this case. Although the decision was made after careful consideration of the facts investigators had available at the time – as well as today, it has become clear that many citizens feel this decision was made in error.
Regarding the case at hand - at the time of the incident it was believed that there was not enough accurate information available to give the public a detailed explanation of what had actually transpired. Therefore a press release was not issued. Although not intended, this caused more questions than answers, along with justifiable concerns from the public. In retrospect, it may have been appropriate to release a general statement regarding the incident.
As an assurance to all of our citizens, the Police Department has the highest commitment to the protection of life and property. Decisions such as the one made in this case are only made after considering the safety of the public first and foremost. We have strived to improve our ability to make public notifications and alerts via new technologies such as routine press releases, our website, Nixle.com, and our face book page. The department has an exceptional record with regard to ensuring the public is made aware of safety issues in their neighborhoods and we will continue to do so to the best of our ability.
As a father of two daughters, I empathize with those of you who have concerns regarding this case and pledge to personally review each future reported incident to ensure appropriate notifications are made.
