Airplane Accident

On Thursday, August 30, 2012 at approximately 11:55 am, Sheriff’s dispatch received a report of an airplane that had crashed in a vineyard near the 1500 block West Dry Creek Road, Healdsburg.

Sheriff’s Deputies, the Sheriff’s Office Helicopter (Henry-1), and medical personnel responded and located the aircraft, and the two occupants. The pilot suffered a bloody nose, but otherwise both occupants were uninjured and walked away from the crash.

The pilot stated the plane had an engine failure during his flight towards the Sonoma County Airport. The pilot quickly identified an open field to execute an emergency landing after he was unable to restart the engine. The airplane touched down and the front landing gear collapsed at impact causing the plane to nose dive into the ground.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has the investigative authority over airplane accidents. A FAA safety inspector responded to the scene to conduct an investigation. For further information regarding the accident, please contact the FAA media center at (310) 725-3580.
