Jail Pants In Public Results in Arrest at Gunpoint of Recently Released Inmate by Off-Duty LASD SCV Deputy

In the afternoon hours of Tues, August 28, 2012, an off-duty Los Angeles County Sheriff’s was near the 25400 block of The Old Road, Stevenson Ranch. The deputy saw an individual wearing a blue pair of L.A. County Jail inmate jumpsuit pants running through a Wal-Mart parking lot, in Stevenson Ranch.

Believing that the man had just escaped from a nearby jail, the off-duty deputy followed the suspect and watched him while calling 911.

A second off-duty Los Angeles County Sheriff’s employee made the same observation from a different area of the parking lot, and also followed the suspect while calling 911.

As uniformed deputies from Santa Clarita Sheriff's Station were responding to the location, the off-duty Sheriff’s deputy saw the individual run toward a multi-unit apartment complex.

Concerned that the individual would run into the large apartment complex, and concerned for the public’s safety, the off-duty Sheriff’s deputy identified himself and detained the suspect at gunpoint until Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station deputies arrived.

Once Sheriff’s deputies arrived, the suspect was taken into custody without incident.

After further investigation, it was determined that the suspect had not escaped from a Los Angeles County Jail. In fact, he had been released a day before (August 27, 2012).

Deputies determined that the suspect, 22-year-old Marcus Garcia, a Saugus resident, stole the jail jumpsuit pants while being released from an L.A. County Sheriff’s jail. At that time, Marcus Garcia was serving a 180 day sentence for a felony charge of Petty Theft with Prior Convictions (666 P.C.).

The suspect was arrested and transported to Santa Clarita Station, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, where he was booked for Possession of Stolen Property, 496(a) PC, with a $20,000 dollar bail.
