Advisory

Compton Sheriff’s Station Conduct School Safety Campaign.

With school starting this week, Compton Sheriff’s Station wants to send a clear message to motorist traveling near or around school grounds.

In the past, there has been an ongoing problem at various Compton area schools with crosswalk safety. An area of concern is motorist not yielding to pedestrians walking in crosswalks near schools. On August 27, 2012 the Compton Station Traffic and Community Relations Details conducted a cross walk safety/education campaign.

Several Compton area schools were targeted and over 70 citations were issued to violators who failed to yield to pedestrians and other associated violations. Similar school safety events will be conducted in the near future.

California vehicle code section 21950(a), states that the driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection.

This event was funded from the City of Compton Justice Assistance Grant.
